Reefer container: everything you need to know before buying

Food, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, cut flowers: the cold chain is everywhere. The reefer container has become an essential tool, but it hides a technical complexity that many underestimate. This guide gives you all the keys to choose your refrigerated container.

How does a reefer container work?

A reefer container is a standard maritime container with integrated a refrigeration unit at one end. This group — composed of a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator — works just like a refrigerator domestic, but on an industrial scale.

The big difference with a classic cold room is that the reefer regulates the temperature of the air circulating inside, not the temperature of the goods directly. Cold air enters through the floor (pierced with air channels) and exits through the ceiling, creating continuous circulation. This is why loading must be organized so as not to block this traffic.

The standard temperature range is -35°C to +30°C, but some high-end models go down to -60°C for pharmaceutical applications or scientists. The regulation accuracy is generally ±0.5°C.

Power supply: the critical point

This is the topic that surprises first-time buyers the most. A reefer container does not work autonomously. It must be permanently connected to an electrical power source. Without power, the cold chain is interrupted.

Power Options

1

Connection to the network (380V three-phase)

Ideal solution for fixed installation. Requires connection three-phase electric 32A minimum. Operating cost: 8 to 15 kWh/day depending on the target temperature and the ambient thermal insulation.

2

Dedicated generator

For sites without network access or in temporary use. A 15 kVA group is generally sufficient for a 20' reefer. Consider the noise and fuel consumption (2 to 4 L/hour).

3

Integrated generator (genset)

The genset is a small group attached under the container. Preferred solution for maritime or rail transport where no power is available. Supplement of €3,000 to €5,000 on purchase.

New, reconditioned or sold as is: the real differences

The used reefer market is structured into three categories, and the price difference between them is significant.

The reconditioned reefer (or "cargo-worthy") is our recommendation main for fixed professional use. The container has been inspected, the refrigeration unit revised, the seals replaced and the structure waterproof tested. It comes with an inspection report. Price: €6,000 to €9,000 depending on size.

The first voyage reefer only made one maritime journey. It is almost new, all parts are original, the cold unit warranty is often still valid. It is the best option for applications pharmaceutical or food products subject to audit. Price: €9,000 to €14,000.

The reefer sold as is is to be reserved for buyers professionals who have the skills to assess and repair themselves. The chiller may be out of service or require replacement parts expensive. The low price (€3,000 to €5,000) can quickly be made up for by repairs.

The most common applications

Eating

Fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products. Temperature 0°C to +4°C. The reefer advantageously replaces a fixed cold room for producers, wholesalers and restaurateurs.

Pharmaceutical

Vaccines, heat-sensitive drugs. Temperature +2°C to +8°C with data logger required. Requires a reefer first trip with GDP certification.

Other uses

Cut flowers, cosmetics, epoxy resins, photosensitive materials, agricultural seeds. Any product sensitive to heat or requiring a stable temperature.

What we check before delivering a reefer to you

At CONTENEUR PRO, each reefer container goes through an inspection in 12 points before shipping. Here are the essential checks that you should demand from any supplier.

  • check_circle Light tightness test (interior visual inspection with closed doors)
  • check_circle Temperature drop test to target value
  • check_circle Checking and replacing if necessary door seals
  • check_circle Checking the refrigerant gas level (R404A or R134a)
  • check_circle Checking the integrity of the grooved floor (air channels)
  • check_circle Time-stamped test report provided on delivery
