5 unusual uses for converted shipping containers
We imagine them stacked in a port of Rotterdam or crossing the Atlantic loaded with goods. But shipping containers have a second life unsuspected, far from port terminals. Here are five uses that are changing the way we think about modular space.
The pop-up store and the ephemeral bar
Ephemeral commerce has found its ideal partner in the container. A 20' furnished apartment can become a bar, a fashion boutique, a concept store or a gourmet stand in just a few weeks of transformation. It is installed wherever it is needed – festival, market, parking lot, urban wasteland – and moves to the next season.
Typical layouts include a glass facade or a lifting wall forming a canopy, an integrated counter, LED track lighting, an electrical installation to ERP standards and sometimes a cold unit for cocktail bars or delicatessens.
The cost of a ready-to-use bar container ranges between €15,000 and €35,000, depending on the equipment. Compared to the layout of a commercial premises (lease, works, deposit), the return on investment is often obtained from the first season of operation.
The classroom and training center
In areas of rapid construction or in countries where infrastructure educational institutions are struggling to keep up with demographic growth, the container developed is essential as an emergency solution that lasts. A 40' High Cube offers a perfectly usable surface area of 28 m² as a classroom for 20 to 25 students.
In France, several vocational high schools and continuing education centers have adopted container modules to expand their reception capacity without permanent construction. The advantages are multiple: delivery time delivery 6 to 8 weeks, cost half as much as construction traditional, and total reversibility if needs change.
Thermal and acoustic insulation is the key point of these arrangements. A double wall with rock wool insulation and soundproofing makes it possible to achieve RT2020 thermal standards and a weakening index acoustic of 40 dB.
The edge data center (Edge Computing)
This is a use that few people imagine: the maritime container has become an IT industry standard for quickly deploying micro data centers. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Google use 40' containers equipped with servers, air conditioning industrial and corrugated power systems to deploy computing capabilities where permanent buildings do not yet exist.
At the scale of SMEs and ETIs, this approach is of interest to companies who need secure, air-conditioned server hosting on their own site (factory, warehouse) without going through a third-party data center. A 20' container can accommodate several server bays in controlled thermal conditions, with a redundant power supply and a remote control system.
The recording studio and artist's studio
The acoustics of a raw steel container are catastrophic: any vibration spreads and resonates. But this same steel, once correctly insulated, becomes the perfect envelope of a hermetic sound space. Container recording studios are multiplying in the courtyards of Parisian buildings, industrial zones and wineries that want event space.
The technique consists of building a “box within a box”: a floating interior structure on anti-vibration pads, separated from the walls of the container. This system, combined with a multi-layer acoustic insulation, achieves insulation 50 to 60 dB — enough to record amplified music without disturbing the neighborhood.
The vertical micro-farm and the agricultural laboratory
Urban container farming is one of the most popular applications promising and the least known to the general public. Specialized startups transform 40' into fully hydroponic or aeroponic farms autonomous: full-spectrum LED, automated irrigation, CO₂ sensors and humidity, production of 50 to 100 kg of salads or aromatic herbs per week in a single container.
Interest in collective catering, caterers and hotels is obvious: ultra-local production, without pesticides, with full traceability and a guaranteed 52-week supply per year, regardless of climatic or logistical hazards.
The reefer container plays a key role here, as it helps maintain the ideal cultivation temperature (18°C to 24°C) whatever the season or geographical location, from Brittany to Finland.
